At SciBite/Elsevier we take great pride in our commitment to fostering diversity and inclusion in the tech industry. SciBite/Elsevier have recently launched a Girls in Tech program which aims to be instrumental in inspiring young women to pursue careers in technology and showcasing the broader impact of our company in the global tech landscape.

Breaking barriers and shaping minds

Recently, Helen Potts, Director of Product at SciBite, delivered an engaging and myth-busting presentation titled “Women in Technology – Inspiring the Next Generation” to female students from Clayesmore Prep School Years 7 to 9. The presentation featured a code-breaking workshop that challenged students to employ encryption tools such as the Caesar Cipher Wheel, Vignere Code Grid, and a Paper Enigma machine. Through this hands-on experience Helen highlighted the exciting opportunities available to women in the tech world, busting the myths that have perpetuated gender stereotypes in the industry.

During the talk and workshop, Helen’s passion for her specialist and leadership roles at SciBite shone through as she shared her journey and the remarkable accomplishments of other women in the tech sector. Witnessing these successful women in action left the students feeling enthused, educate, and empowered, opening their eyes to a world of possibilities in technology. Such experiences are invaluable in shaping young minds and encouraging them to pursue careers in the field.

SciBite/Elsevier’s role in fostering change

We understand that inspiring the next generation of female tech professionals is not just about a one-time event; it requires a sustained commitment to fostering a fair and inclusive work environment. We align our efforts with the Gender Pay Gap Action Plan, as well as promoting proportionality in promotions. By addressing these issues head-on and sharing the steps taken across our organization, we aim to empower all employees to contribute to fair access to work principles.

Our Girls in Tech program stands as a testament to the positive impact we can have on young women entering the tech industry. It is a part of our broader story in the global tech landscape, where we champion diversity and inclusion as fundamental values that drive innovation and excellence. We firmly believe that diverse teams lead to better outcomes, and our commitment to empowering women in technology is a reflection of that belief.

A Call to Action

Each one of us has a role to play in shaping a more inclusive and diverse workplace. Let us all reflect on our own work habits and actions to ensure we are creating an environment that supports and encourages women wanting to move into tech. To further support this journey, we encourage you to take the following practical steps:

  • Volunteer as a speaker at a Girls in Tech event – Women only, as it is important for young women to see someone who is like them.

What you can do:

  • Get in touch with your local schools and ask if you can organize a Girls in Tech event.
  • Contribute to a Girls in Tech library of workshop materials.
  • Mentorship – offer your mentorship to young women aspiring to enter the tech industry. Share your experiences and insights to guide them on their path.
  • Advocacy – Be an advocate for diversity and inclusion within your team and organization. Encourage open discussions and initiatives that promote a fair and inclusive workplace.
  • Allies: Male allies play a crucial role in fostering an inclusive work environment. Stand up against gender bias and actively support women in their career growth.

To volunteer as a speaker, talk to your local schools or contribute to a library of workshop materials.

Let us continue to celebrate the achievements of women in technology and work together to create an environment where everyone has equal opportunities to succeed.
